Wildlife Sightings

Salmon Sightings
  • On Oct 2, 1999, we spotted a salmon spawning in McAleer Creek.
  • A year later, on Oct 11-14, 2000, we saw a salmon spawning in McAleer Creek.
  • We also saw, in October, 2000, a salmon in McAleer. This is a Chinook, which is listed as threatened under ESA, and its presence there has far reaching implications.
  • An LFP Enterprise article about salmon sighting in McAleer Creek, October, 2000. [page 1, page 2]
  • And here are the photos of salmon we saw in October, 2004

Reptile Sightings
  • September 25, 2003. Brookside Creek, near the Cole Name Preserve, a Coastal (Pacific) Salamander (Dicamptodon tenebrosus) was sighted. Here is a photo of it in the stream, and a close-up photo shows the details.  Learn more about it at this USGS site. It is a species at risk. Much of the Pacific giant salamander’s historic habitat has been degraded or lost. They are listed as threatened by Canada Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and are now protected by law in Canada.
