Celebrate Lake Forest Park—a Community Wildlife Habitat
Celebrate Lake Forest Park becoming the 21st Community Wildlife Habitat in the nation certified by the National Wildlife Federation. The celebration will be at Third Place Commons in the Lake Forest Park Towne Centre, 17171 Bothell Way in conjunction with Lake Forest Park’s Dig-It Green Fair on Saturday, April 21st from 12 to 3 p.m. Join the Good Stewards team, residents with certified Backyard Wildlife Habitats, and other community members in celebrating this recognition.
Besides the certification presentation at 12 noon, the festivities will include our community’s Dig-It Green Fair and events at Lake Forest Park Elementary School (18500 37th Ave NE) from 1 to 3, including a Native Plant Sale, family events, a tour of their six Wildlife Gardens and the new science resource room. There will also be a tour of several certified Backyard Wildlife Habitats between 1 and 3.
For recognition as a Community Wildlife Habitat, 165 Lake Forest Park properties have been certified by the National Wildlife Federation and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife as Backyard Habitats that provide food, water, cover and places to raise young as well as practice sustainable gardening practices. We have had 2 businesses certified for providing in-kind benefits, have certified all 5 parks and have certified both elementary schools for their environmental education programs and habitat development.
The Community Wildlife Habitat project is part of NWF’s Habitats Education program. These projects benefit the entire community of plants, wildlife and people through the creation of sustainable landscapes that require little or no pesticides, fertilizers or excess watering. They encourage the creation of corridors for wildlife and create environments that are healthier for people and are less resource dependent than traditional landscaping.
The National Wildlife Federation has certified more than 77,500 yards since it began the program in 1973. For additional information about the Good Stewards project, email: lfpwildlife@comcast.net or the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation www.lfpsf.org or (206) 361-7076.
