Photos from the training session for macroinvertebrates population assessment
(Sponsored by the Streamkeepers of Lake Forest Park, July 9, 2005)

Photos 1-6: Mark Phillips and Wendy Frank collect samples of macro invertebrates (e.g., insects) from the streambed of Brookside Creek. They used a special device designed to sample macroinvertebrates within a specified (about one square foot) area, strictly following the standardized sampling procedure developed by Prof. James Karr of the University of Washington and his colleagues at the Center for Water and Watershed Studies.

Photo 7: Mamie Bolender uses a magnifier to examine the surface of a rock found within the 1 square foot sampling area for macroinvertebrates.

Photo 8: Small invertebrates captured by the collection device is transferred to a 500 micron sieve. They are then transferred to a plastic container and mailed to a lab for analysis.

Photo 9: Susie O'Donnell holds a jar of macroinvertebrates sampled today, while Peggy Stephenson reads the detailed instructions for sample collection, developed by Prof. James Karr of Univ. of Washington.  The jar is filled with 70% denatured ethanol to preserve the sample, which will then be sent to a lab for identification and analysis.
